The Perfect Cancer-Fighting Salad

Start with dark, leafy greens For the healthiest salad foundation, stick with a mix of spinach, arugula, and romaine. They contain a hefty amount of the B vitamin folate, which has been shown to reduce the risk of getting colorectal, ovarian and breast cancers. In one study, researchers at Vanderbilt University found that women who ate the mostly dark greens were among the least likely to get breast cancer. Apparently, folate can halt changes in DNA that trigger runaway cell growth, the main characteristic of cancer.

The Perfect Cancer-Fighting Salad

Heap on beans
A variety of beans, like black, white, kidney, etc., will fortify your salad with craving-quenching protein and some tasty texture, which can help bust a “salads are boring” lunch rut. Even better, women who ate beans at least twice a week were 24 percent less likely to develop breast cancer than those who ate them less often, report Harvard School of Public Health researchers who analyzed data from 90,630 people. Legumes may lessen risk of breast cancer, thanks to their ability to suppress the production of enzymes that encourage tumor growth.

The Perfect Cancer-Fighting Salad

Slice up some tomatoes
Not only do tomatoes add juicy flavor, their powerful lycopene—the plant chemical that gives them their color—is a major cancer enemy. German research on 165 colonoscopy patients found that those who had the lowest blood levels of lycopene had the highest rate of colorectal adenomas, a precursor to colorectal cancer. Toss a few tomatoes into your guy’s salad: They also reduce the risk of prostate cancer.

For an even healthier lunch, buy orange tomatoes. Research shows that they provide more lycopene than their red-hued relatives do.

The Perfect Cancer-Fighting Salad

Add avocado
Healthy as they are, vegetables have an unexpected downside. Many of them are virtually fat free, and you need fat in the meal to absorb cancer-fighting carotenoids. That’s where smooth, creamy avocado comes in. In Ohio State University research, volunteers were given a salad either with or without 3 tablespoons of avocado. Blood tests showed that those who ate the avocado got 4.3 times as much lutein, 8.3 times as much alpha-carotene and a whopping 13.6 times as much beta-carotene as those who ate salad without it.

But avocados are a bit high in calories. To avoid weight gain, use avocado in place of another high-fat topper, such as cheese.

The Perfect Cancer-Fighting Salad

Splash on vinaigrette
Mixing your favorite vinegar with olive oil can also help prevent breast cancer. Scientists from Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine found that oleic acid in olive oil dramatically cuts the levels of the cancer gene Her-2/neu, associated with highly aggressive breast tumors with poor prognosis.

The Perfect Cancer-Fighting Salad

Garnish with citrus peel
It’s like eating sunscreen but tastes better. Limonene—a compound that gives oranges, lemons and limes their scent—is linked to a 34 percent reduction in skin cancer, according to a University of Arizona study of 400 people.

The Perfect Cancer-Fighting Salad

Add shredded carrot

If you’re already using this salad staple, good! If not, embrace your inner rabbit and make it a must-eat. In a study from Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, women who ate just five servings of four raw carrot sticks a week had a 54 percent decrease in their risk of getting ovarian cancer, compared with women who ate them less than once a month. Carrots may also reduce your risk of kidney cancer.

eruption from V838 Monocerotis

We report the XMM-Newton/EPIC detection in 2008 March of a pair of spatially confused X-ray sources in the vicinity of the enigmatic star V838 Mon, which underwent a spectacular outburst in early 2002. Spectral/spatial analysis demonstrates the presence of a relatively hard (T_X ~ 1.5x10^7K), luminous (L_X ~ 10^32 erg/s) source that is spatially coincident with V838 Mon itself, and a second, more luminous (L_X ~10^33 erg/s) source located ~8" south of V838 Mon (projected separation ~ 0.2pc if at the ~6 kpc distance of V838 Mon). Neither source was detected in a Chandra/ACIS-S observation obtained about one year after outburst. The inferred X-ray luminosity and temperature of the hard source component at the position of V838 Mon, as well as its delayed appearance, appear consistent with a stellar merger scenario for the optical/IR outburst of V838 Mon, and inconsistent with scenarios involving He flash mechanisms. The southern X-ray source component, coincident with a faint red star detected in the 2MASS survey (and in the Hubble images), appears to be an energetically flaring young main sequence or pre-main sequence member of the V838 Mon cluster, in which case its appearance would be coincidental and unrelated to the V838 Mon eruption. Further X-ray observations of V838 Mon are warranted, to confirm the position(s) of the source(s) in the vicinity of V838 Mon and to establish their long- and short-term temporal behavior.

Tongues, Leashes and a Stumble

Adam Lamberts AMA Performance

Awesome or Inappropriate?

Adam Lambert is certainly someone who's blowing up twitter headlines! He knows how to get people talking. "I'm about to turn up the heat", Adam said before his performance, and he sure did! His AMA performance could have just been his post "Idol" breakout show, but instead it's one of those "did he take it too far?" moments of awards. ROUGH is one word to describe his performance. Dancers in leather harnesses and jackboots dancing all over the stage. A moment of simulated pelvis thrusting. Fondling a female dancer's nether regions and made out with his male keyboardist!Adam are you nuts?! Viewers at home felt it was a sexually provocative performance and he drew THOUSANDS of complaints to ABC.

Anti Cancer Superfoods

Broccoli and cabbage
British researchers made headlines last year with a study that showed that men with early signs of developing prostate cancer prevented tumor growth by eating broccoli four times a week. Other studies have shown anti-cancer benefits from eating cabbage, Brussels sprouts, and other cruciferous vegetables.
Tomatoes
Harvard researcher Edward Giovannucci reviewed 72 different studies published by the National Cancer Institute, and concluded that lycopene, the active chemical in tomatoes, lowered the risk of many different cancers, particularly prostate, breast, lung and colon cancer. Subsequently, the FDA conducted a review of its own and disagreed, refusing food companies' request to label tomato products with an anti-cancer health promotion message. However, many experts believe the FDA's process was flawed and that tomatoes will be vindicated by further studies. The good news: cooking tomatoes seems to enhance the effects of lycopene, qualifying tomato-based spaghetti sauce as a nutritional powerhouse. Bring on the pasta!
Soy
The active ingredient in soy is genistein, which is a phytoestrogen that protects against hormone-dependent cancers. It's also a powerful inhibitor of several proteins that are implicated in the uncontrolled growth of cancer cells. To get the anti-cancer benefits of soy, you need to consume about 50 grams per day of the whole food, such as raw fresh soybeans, known as edamame, dry roasted soybeans, or tofu. The research to date shows that supplements containing isoflavones don't work with the same action as soybeans themselves and in fact can be bad for you rather than good.

Watercress and Spinach
Watercress isn't exactly a major part of the American diet. But maybe it should be, according to researchers in Ireland, who released studies in the past two years showing that eating watercress everyday can prevent the DNA damage that leads to cancer. Research published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition—but conducted in Ulster, where people are more comfortable eating watercress—found that antioxidants in the nutrient-rich greens prevented free radicals from damaging healthy cells. Spinach, which we're all more familiar with, is also a cancer fighter; research conducted by the M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in Texas showed spinach to protect against bladder cancer. The chemical that gives spinach its dark green color, chlorophyllin, proved to reduce the risk of liver cancer in research by the National Academy of Sciences. Who cares about muscles? Here's a much more important reason to eat your greens.

Anti-Cancer Superfoods Really Work

Here, the top foods to work into the family diet if you'd like to cut cancer risk or help those with cancer recover. And who wouldn't? Blueberries, açai berries, raspberries, and cranberries. The rich, dark colors of blueberries, Brazilian açai berries, raspberries and cranberries come from phytochemicals that protect against numerous types of cancer. Most recently, researchers found that the active ingredient in açai berries destroyed cancer cells when tested in cell cultures. Blueberries and muscadine grapes contain compounds that recent research shows cause cancer cells in the liver to self-destruct. In studies particularly important to women, cranberries have recently been discovered to be an important weapon in the fight against deadly ovarian cancer. Studies reported at the annual meeting of the American Chemical Society found that ovarian cancer cells that were becoming resistant to platinum chemotherapy the standard of care for ovarian cancer became six times more sensitive when exposed to a compound in cranberries.
The anti-cancer properties of all these berries are so strong that researchers have developing concentrated supplements and other products such as purees and concentrates.

The Perfect Cancer-Fighting Salad

When it comes to your health, not all salads are created equal. In fact, many takeout and restaurant salads are essentially calorie bombs disguised as health food—drenched in creamy, caloric dressings and missing key nutrients with powerful disease-fighting potential. Next time you make your own salad, here’s exactly what to include for maximum health benefits—and taste.1. 4 Ways To Control Your Appetite

1.Rate Your Hunger
Before you automatically pop something into your mouth,
rate your hunger on a scale of 1 to 5, with 1 being ravenous
and 5 being stuffed. If you’re at a 4 or a 5, your "hunger" is
not physical, and you should examine what is compelling you to eat.

2. Stop Mindless Eating
We’re often so distracted by outside stimuli that we chow down
without thinking about how much we’re consuming.
3. Be Aware of Triggers
We eat in the absence of physical hunger largely because the
combination of fat, sugar and salt in many packaged foods is
difficult for humans to resist. The more of these ingredients
we eat, the more dopamine our brain produces, and the more
fixated on eating we become. Over time, the mere sight or smell
of certain foods is enough to activate the brain’s pleasure centers.

4. Eat Filling Foods
People don’t rely on the number of calories they’ve
consumed in order to know they’re full. Instead, they eat until they hit
a certain volume of food. Tricking your body into thinking it has taken in more
calories than it actually has by choosing items that contain a lot of water,
such as vegetables, fruits and brothy soups.

Trishna And Krishna, Twins Conjoined At Head

Formerly conjoined Bangladeshi twins spent their first night in separate beds and were in serious but stable condition Wednesday following a marathon surgery to separate the toddlers, who were born joined at their heads. Trishna and Krishna, who turn 3 next month, shared a section of skull, blood vessels and brain tissue. They were separated Tuesday after 25 hours of delicate surgery and reconstruction by a team of 16 surgeons and nurses. The girls will remain in an induced coma for monitoring for several days. Before the surgery, doctors had said there was a 50 percent chance the girls could suffer brain damage and a 25 percent chance one of the sisters would die. But Trishna and Krishna are fine and are normally active.

Hid Love Notes

6 year old Elena Desserich was diagnosed with brain cancer, she began hiding hundreds of little love notes around the house for her parents to find after she was gone. Just before her sixth birthday, Elena Desserich was diagnosed with brain cancer and given 135 days to live. She lived 255 days, and passed away in 2007. After her death, Elena’s parents, Brooke and Keith, found hundreds of notes from Elena hidden around the house. They were found in between CD cases, bookshelves, in dresser drawers, in backpacks. "It just felt like a little hug from her, like she was telling us she was looking over us".

Baby Run Over By Train

In a heart stopping split second, an Australian mother watches as her 6 month old son rolls onto a train track and under an oncoming train and escapes with just a scratch!!! I was amazed by this video. I kept watching it over and over to understand but miracles of God work in mysterious ways!

It could happen to any parent. A freak accident! You release the brake on the stroller to prepare to board the train, and it rolls away from you. For Shweta Verma, a 29-year-old mother and dentist who lives in Melbourne, it is a nightmare that keeps replaying in her head and on TV, thanks to a surveillance camera that captured the entire terrifying episode on film.

SLAP CHOP vs. KNIFE

That headset wearing guy Vince who is slapping and chopping with great excitement must know some secret trick or have had some kind of special advantage with the food he was using. Maybe it was pre-cut. Who knows? But outside that studio, WalletPop put Slap Chop to the test -- both in a regular kitchen and the kitchen of someone who chops for a living. The result: not so good. Slap Chop couldn't cut through the outside of a tomato. It left a tomato cut-apart inside while still held together by a cut, but not cut-through skin. Other items on the chopping block, such as an onion. Unlike Vince's experience it had to be prepped so much for slapping, it was hardly worth the bother of adding another tool to the mix.

OUCH! >.<

Spike Jonze seems to have played out the fantasy of many people post-VMAs, as the acclaimed director gives Kanye West a big old slap across the face in an outtake from the duo's 'Once Upon a Fairy Tale's video that emerged earlier this month. walk for love <3

An 88-year-old woman in Colorado Springs who walked laps around a nursing home in memory of her deceased husband has hit a major milestone: 10,000 miles. Martha Michel walks laps daily around the lake at Namaste Alzheimer Center. Michel started walking the lake with her husband, former Colorado College Professor Dr. Lester Michel, who was a patient at the center. After Lester Michel's death in 1998, Martha Michel kept up the walking in his memory. The two were married 56 years and enjoyed hiking Colorado peaks until Lester Michel got too sick. Martha Michel keeps meticulous records of her walks around the lake, and on Saturday, she hit 10,000 miles. That's about the same as walking across the United States three times.Five laps around the lake at the nursing home is a mile long. Michel has five children, 18 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Newborn Recieves FFFL!

(FREE FLIGHTS FOR LIFE)

A baby boy who made a surprise arrival on board an AirAsia flight this week will now be given free flights for life! How cool is that!? 31yr old passenger Liew Siaw Hsia went into labour on Wednesday's flight from the northern island of Penang to Kuching on Borneo island. The aircraft made an emergency diversion to the Malaysian capital but the baby arrived just before landing, delivered by a doctor who was on board and who was assisted by the airline's flight attendants. The baby was safely delivered when flight AK 6506 was approaching Kuala Lumpur for landing at 2,000 feet. The mother and baby were taken to a nearby hospital following touchdown. "To celebrate this momentous occasion, we decided to present both mother and child with free flights for life," said AirAsia's director of operations Moses Devanayagam after visiting them in hospital.

2nd Monroe Woodbury High School Attack!?

A 15-year-old boy accused of stockpiling gasoline, propane and a machete for a planned school attack on theanniversary of the Columbine school massacre burst into tears and admitted to police he was upset about being bullied, according to the detective who interviewed him. The boy, whose name hasn't been released, was taken into custody Monday after investigators searched his home in Monroe, 45 miles northwest of New York City, said police Chief Dominic Giudice Jr. He remained in custody at a psychiatric facility Wednesday. The investigation was continuing, but charges will likely be filed in juvenile court, Orange County Attorney David Darwin said Wednesday. The boy told police he planned to attack Monroe-Woodbury High School on April 20, the 11th anniversary of the Columbine High School shootings in Colorado in which 13 people were killed by two suicidal teenagers. Police, acting on a tip, searched the boy's home and found four 16-ounce water bottles filled with gasoline, rags that could be used as fuses, a machete, a long black coat similar to one worn by the Columbine killers, three 20-pound propane tanks and a small propane torch. They also seized two computers and several other data storage devices that are still being analyzed by the district attorney's office. Police said the boy told them he was looking to buy an assault rifle."It was obvious that he was depressed and as we were talking, he had no problem explaining to me everything he was planning on doing," said police Detective David Conklin, who interviewed the boy for about 45 minutes.Conklin said the boy cried as he explained he was picked on and bullied, and why he wanted to take revenge. The boy had transferred out of Monroe-Woodbury, a school of about 2,500 students, but harbored grudges against former classmates, police said. It appears he was going to act alone. The boy's parents had no idea what their son was planning and have been cooperative, police said. The teen was already on juvenile probation stemming from a nonviolent arrest in January. The details of that case are sealed.

Barbie 2.0

The world's best selling doll is losing favor with older girls and market share to sassier rivals. Now, after a reinvention that took 18 months and cost millions of dollars, the rollout of a new version of the toy aims at reclaiming its status as a fashion icon. After many false starts, Mattel thought it had found a way to make the iconic fashion doll once more a must have for girls of all ages and to boost the company's flagging revenues as well. It is spending millions of dollars to promote its new "Fashionista" Barbies, even hiring a choreographer to the stars to create a dance called "The Barbie". Barbie still remains the best selling doll in the world. Since March, Mattel's stock has risen steadily along with the overall market, due in part to investor anticipation of Barbie's revitalization, analysts say. The company is relying on the doll to carry it through the holiday season.

Apple Improves iMAC

This is the week when Microsoft finally starts selling Windows 7, its much-improved successor to the disappointing Vista version of Windows. PC makers, who have suffered from Vista's poor reputation, will begin touting models that come with Windows 7, which I praised in a detailed review earlier this month. But Microsoft's historic rival, Apple, isn't sitting still. After releasing its own new operating system, Snow Leopard, in August, Apple this week is rolling out new versions of two of the best- known Macs: its iconic all-in-one iMac desktop, and its least-expensive laptop, the MacBook. Though both new Macs sport important improvements, they are evolutionary, not revolutionary, and neither follows the industry trend toward bargain-basement prices. The MacBook is still $999, and the iMac still starts at $1,199, though the company is giving users more power and features at those same price points. You can pay much less for laptops and desktops from competitors like Dell and Hewlett-Packard. The new $999, 13" MacBook now includes most of the key features of the similar-sized MacBook Pro, which costs $200 more. These include a large multitouch trackpad, significantly enhanced battery life, and a brighter screen. Despite its lower price, the lowly MacBook comes with a 56% larger hard disk (250 gigabytes versus 160) than the Pro model.

She Faces Prison For Eavesdropping

After a wild phone-hacking spree into some 700 voicemails of frenemies, boyfriends and others, former Dolce & Gabbana publicist and wannabe socialite, Ali Wise, has been arrested and charged on 17 criminal counts. Her accomplice, according to court documents: free software called SpoofCard. Used to snoop on such high-profile socialistas as Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton, SpoofCard allows users to disguise their numbers and access other people's voicemail. Ali Wise couldn't deal with the fact that her ex-boyfriend was dating someone else, so she broke into and spied on their voicemails. It's the stuff of soap operas, but a useful reminder to everyone about data security. Wise now faces up to four years in jail.

Meteor Shower Peaks Overnight ***

The annual meteor shower is created when Earth passes through trails of comet debris left in space long ago by Halley's Comet. The "shooting stars" develop when bits typically no larger than a pea , and mostly sand-grain-sized, vaporize in Earth's upper atmosphere.
"Flakes of comet dust hitting the atmosphere should give us dozens of meteors per hour," said Bill Cooke of NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office.

When and how to watch

The best time to watch will be between 1 a.m. and dawn local time Wednesday morning, regardless of your location. That's when the patch of Earth you are standing on is barreling headlong into space on Earth's orbital track, and meteors get scooped up like bugs on a windshield.

Lohan's Dramatic Change

Lindsay Lohan's facial features are the talk of the Web! Many people are beginning to question whether the young actress had surgical work done despite the fact that she's just 23 years old! Did she go under the knife, or is it maturity and/or her hard-living lifestyle that's changed her looks? What do you guys think?

Do You Prefer OLD LINDSAY or The CURRENT LINDSAY?

Give Us Breast Money Back!!!

Officials from the Miss California pageant are sending a message to Carrie Prejean -- three can play that game! The production company that runs the pageant is filing a cross complaint against Prejean, demanding, among other things, that Carrie return the $5,200 the pageant fronted her for her breast augmentation. In other legal docs, Keith Lewis and crew are asking to strike a portion of Prejean's lawsuit ;the portion dealing with public disclosure of private facts. The new docs say, "the alleged 'private facts' consist of her breast augmentation (which ceased being private during the swimsuit competition of the nationally televised Miss USA pageant, in which Ms. Prejean walked the stage in a bikini)."The cross complaint says, "Had Carrie heeded the guidance of the Gospel of John, who admonished only those who are without sin to cast stones in judgment, she might have avoided this legal battle ..."

Identical twins John & Edward, the controversial contestants on Britain's X Factor caused polarizing performances that are causing fistfights to break out at pub viewing parties across the United Kingdom. Critics are saying that if there was such a thing as Vote For The Worst U.K., John & Edward would be that site's proud posterboys. But thats not all they're also saying that the twins were jaw-droppingly, gob-smackingly, compulsively watchable, even if they might be better watched with the telly's sound turned to mute. Wow thats harsh! But moments like these that people remember and love. What do you guys think?
