Roy Orbison's Chevrolet Corvette

Then there’s Roy Orbison’s gorgeous, cherry-red ’67 Corvette Sting Ray ragtop, another car from the Hall of Fame’s collection currently appearing in the Henry Ford exhibit. Orbison was an inveterate car freak going back to his youth. “Roy had a big collection of cars, but he didn’t buy this one until later in his life, during the time he was with the Traveling Wilburys, and had a new album out and was having a career renaissance. He was driving this car around L.A. all the time during that period. It’s a rare model, and highly collectible.”

Billy Gibbons's '32 Ford Coupe

One custom car that’s immediately identifiable to fans of Tejas electro-boogie is Billy Gibbons’ customized ’32 Ford Coupe, also known as the “Eliminator,” which is part of the Hall of Fame’s collection but was also loaned to the Henry Ford for its current exhibit. Anyone who saw a ZZ Top video in the 1980s remembers this flashy red number, with a stylized “ZZ” pattern painted on the side -- because this crimson sled whooshed through five of the band’s videos. “So, to ZZ Top fans, this car is really an icon,” Kramer said.

Bruce Springsteen’s Hot Ride

Back to Bruce Springsteen’s obsession with cars, cruising, wrenching and racing in the streets: Springsteen, earlier this year, loaned his 1960 Corvette ragtop -- black body with white insert panels -- to the Hall of Fame, where it is presently on display. “The Vette has always been among the finest American-made sports cars, and the one from that year, ’60, is just a beautiful model,” Kramer effused. “This one was of real significance to him -- it was the first great car he could afford, after ‘Born to Run’ became a hit” in 1975.

Cheerleader Sues Over Facebook .

When it comes to Facebook, there's a simple rule of thumb that people seem to always forget: If you don't want someone to see a photo or read a comment, don't post it. Had this rule been applied more often, there'd be fewer lawsuits stemming from content posted on the social-networking giant. According to Ars Technica, high school cheerleader Mandi Jackson has filed suit through her parents against the Pearl, Mississippi school district after she was allegedly forced to turn over her Facebook log-in information to her cheerleading coach on September 10, 2007. The lawsuit (PDF) claims she was also subjected to cruel and unusual punishment after the coach disseminated "profanity-laced" messages to the rest of the staff, after Jackson had exchanged notes with a fellow cheerleader about politicJackson is claiming that this discussion -- which she intended to keep private and was allegedly sent via personal message -- was then shared with other school officials and administrators, who "reprimanded, punished, and humiliated" her. She told the Student Press Law Center: "I would have been completely fine with the school officials looking at my public [profile on] Facebook, but I think they went too far with getting my password and looking at my personal messages between me and my peers." s within the squad.

Russian Navy Hunts for Missing Vessel

LONDON (Aug. 13) - Russian navy vessels were trolling the Atlantic on Thursday in search for a Maltese-flagged ship that has been missing for more than two weeks since sailing through the English Channel.

Malta Maritime Authority said the MV Artic Sea "has not approached the Straits of Gibraltar, which indicates that the ship headed out in the Atlantic Ocean."
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev ordered that "all necessary measures" be taken to find the missing ship, and the Russian navy turned all of its vessels in the Atlantic — including three landing ships, a frigate and two nuclear-powered submarines — to search.

2011 Nissan Leaf Electric Car

YOKOHAMA, Japan — In what the automaker hopes is a prophetic pairing, Nissan Motor Co. unveiled its new electric car as part of the grand opening ceremonies for its new, high-tech headquarters building in Japan's semi-official zero-emissions city.

"Just as leaves purify the air in nature, so Nissan Leaf purifies mobility by taking emissions out of the driving experience," the company said.

The five-seat, electric-blue Leaf hatchback is to be launched in select U.S. and Japanese markets next year to begin what Nissan hopes will become an era of global leadership for the company in a Leadership shouldn't be evasive if the Leaf lives up to its performance billing. A top speed of 90 mph, a range of 100 miles per charge with a 30-minute recharge where quick-charging stations are available (6 hours with a 220-volt current) and seat cushion-compressing acceleration that will launch it from zero to 30 mph faster than an Infiniti G37, thanks to 207 pound-feet of torque from its 80 kilowatt (107 horsepower) electric motor are all part of the package

Woman Earns Ph.D. in SMS

Proving that you really can study anything you want in college, Dr. Caroline Tagg has received a Ph.D. for studying text messaging. The 33-year-old academic spent the last three-and-a-half years studying the use of language in texts at England's Birmingham University English department. For the purposes of her research, Tagg had 235 volunteers send her every text message they sent or received, totaling 11,000 messages. Her research showed that people treat text messages in much the same way as they do regular, spoken conversation. According to Tagg, abbreviations show up less than one might expect, while texts, like speech, are often riddled with unnecessary words like "um" and "oh." In speaking with the Telegraph, Tagg called the language used in SMS "playful," going on to characterize it as "quite creative" and "expressive." As an example, she pointed to one message in particular: "I will be there not on the dot," in reference to being late for something.

While some would simply talk it out, this cop allegedly decided to let his fists do the talking. According to Your4State.com, ...

Obama: Health critics creating 'boogeymen'

PORTSMOUTH, N.H. - Hoping to blunt the momentum of critics, President Barack Obama went on the offensive in support of his health care plan Tuesday, urging the country not to listen to those who seek to "scare and mislead the American people."

"For all the scare tactics out there, what is truly scary is if we do nothing," Obama told a friendly town hall audience.

Retooling his message amid sliding support, Obama poked at critics who he said were trying to "scare the heck out of folks." He said there should be a vigorous debate over health care, but "with each other, not over each other."
