Iceland's volcano

The program, code named Gaia for the Greek goddess of the earth, was attacked in a lightning raid taking less than two days last December, the person said. Described publicly only once at a technical conference four years ago, the software is intended to enable users and employees to sign in with their password just once to operate a range of services.
The intruders do not appear to have stolen passwords of Gmail users, and the company quickly started making significant changes to the security of its networks after the intrusions. But the theft leaves open the possibility, however faint, that the intruders may find weaknesses that Google might not even be aware of, independent computer experts said. The new details seem likely to increase the debate about the security and privacy of vast computing systems such as Google’s that now centralize the personal information of millions of individuals and businesses. Because vast amounts of digital information are stored in one place, popularly referred to as “cloud” computing, a single breach can lead to disastrous losses.
Poisoned’ Web site
By clicking on a link and connecting to a “poisoned” Web site, the employee inadvertently permitted the intruders to gain access to his (or her) personal computer and then to the computers of a critical group of software developers at Google’s headquarters in Mountain View, Calif. Ultimately, the intruders were able to gain control of a software repository used by the development team.
The details surrounding the theft of the software have been a closely guarded secret by the company. Google first publicly disclosed the theft in a Jan. 12 posting on the company’s Web site, which stated that the company was changing its policy toward China in the wake of the theft of unidentified “intellectual property” and the apparent compromise of the e-mail accounts of two human rights advocates in China.
The accusations became a significant source of tension between the United States and China, leading Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton to urge China to conduct a “transparent” inquiry into the attack. In March, after difficult discussions with the Chinese government, Google said it would move its mainland Chinese-language Web site and begin rerouting search queries to its Hong Kong-based site.
Company executives on Monday declined to comment about the new details of the case, saying they had dealt with the security issues raised by the theft of the company’s intellectual property in their initial statement in January.
Google executives have also said privately that the company had been far more transparent about the intrusions than any of the more than two dozen other companies that were compromised, the vast majority of which have not acknowledged the attacks

Cyclone Kills 89 People in Eastern India
A cyclone packing winds of more than 100 mph (160 kph) demolished ten of thousands of mud huts in northeastern India, killing at least 89 villagers, officials said Wednesday. The cyclone struck close to midnight on Tuesday in northeastern parts of West Bengal and Bihar states, uprooting trees and snapping telephone and electricity lines, West Bengal Civil Defense Minister Srikumar Mukherjee said. Hundreds of people were injured and many thousands left homeless
Television footage showed uprooted trees lying across shanties and sheets of corrugated metal ripped from the roofs of homes. Small children sat outside their damaged huts as parents tried to salvage their belongings from inside.
Namita Biswas, 51, a housewife in West Bengal, told The Associated Press by phone she and her husband were sleeping in their hut when it was crushed by a tree that broke from the impact of the cyclone. Her husband was killed. The cyclone demolished nearly 50,000 mud huts in West Bengal and thousands more in Bihar, officials said.
The worst-hit villages in West Bengal state were Hematabad, Raiganj and Kiran Dighi, where police and rescue teams have recovered 39 bodies, Ramanuj Chakraborty, a senior local official told The Associated Press.
Another 50 people were killed in the northeastern Bihar districts of Araria, Kishenganj and Purnea, according to government officials.
By Wednesday evening, authorities had begun rushing medical teams and food supplies to the cyclone-hit area, Ramanuj Chakraborty, a West Bengal official said. Temporary shelters were also being set up for those who had lost their homes, he said.
A prison wall collapsed in Bihar's Araria district, forcing authorities to shift more than 600 inmates to another prison, officials said.

Apple Delays International iPad
U.S. buyers have been snapping up the iPad so quickly that Apple Inc. is delaying the tablet computer's overseas debut a second time, the company said Wednesday.Apple said it will now start taking orders for the iPad from international buyers on May 10.
In January, it said the iPad would be sold worldwide in late March. After analysts reported production delays would limit the number of units available, Apple postponed the U.S. launch to April 3 and delayed plans
Word of the second delay didn't faze Apple investors, who are eager to see signs the iPad is selling well. Apple shares rose $2.39, or 1 percent, to $244.82 in morning trading.
"We know that many international customers waiting to buy an iPad will be disappointed by this news, but we hope they will be pleased to learn the reason — the iPad is a runaway success in the U.S. thus far," Apple said in a statement.

Business owners work to repair damage from quake
CALEXICO, Calif. (AP) - Business owners in Calexico are working to repair damage to their stores and trying to resume some sense of normalcy following one of the strongest earthquakes to hit the region in decades.Businesses already were suffering from the hard economic times on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border when Sunday's deadly 7.2-magnitude earthquake shattered storefronts, caved in roofs and caused Calexico's vital international port of entry for vehicles to shut down.
Calexico, the U.S. city hit hardest by the quake, has one of the highest unemployment rates in California, and business owners say even after they repair the damages to their stores, it could take months or longer for the economy to bounce back.
The port of entry was closed because of damage to a federal building and will not open until engineers finish inspecting it. No date was set for when the port will reopen to vehicle traffic, and for now drivers who want to enter the United States must go 10 miles out of their way to another border crossing.
Inspectors red-tagged nearly 80 percent of the city's historic downtown area Monday. Yellow police tape lined the streets of the city's downtown littered with broken glass and fallen plaster from the prewar buildings.
City Manager Victor Carrillo said the damage will easily total millions of dollars.
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger proclaimed a state of emergency Monday for Imperial County, which will free up state resources to aid the recovery effort.
"We're going to be hurting for a while," said Polo Loo, whose grocery store was littered with merchandise on the floor. "The economy was not great already and with this, it is going to be even worse."
Damage included three huge tanks that hold the water supply for the city of about 38,000 residents, as well as a 10 million-gallon water-clarifying tank, Carrillo said. Officials were pushing for federal money to come quickly before the desert city's temperatures soar above 110 degrees this summer, he added.
Two people were killed and at least 100 injured near the epicenter of the huge quake in Mexicali, just south of the border.
Dozens of aftershocks have rattled the region.
Hawaii man's China military secrets trial to begin
Noshir Gowadia has pleaded not guilty to 21 counts, including conspiracy, violating the arms export control act and money laundering. The indictment accuses Gowadia of helping China design a cruise missile with stealth capabilities.
The trial comes some 4½ years after Gowadia's arrest and more than three years after his trial was originally scheduled to be held. The 66-year-old Haiku resident has been in federal detention since his October 2005 arrest because a judge ruled he was a flight risk.
The trial is expected to last at least two months. Ashton Gowadia said his father is looking forward to defending himself.
"Dad is very confident that he will be found 100 percent innocent of any crimes," the younger Gowadia said in an e-mail to The Associated Press.
Larry M. Wortzel, commissioner of the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission, said the trial will be closely watched by the intelligence community, the FBI, and military because it's one of a series of major cases involving Chinese spying on the U.S.
Prosecutors allege Gowadia helped design an exhaust nozzle for China that gives off less heat, making it difficult for infrared detectors to find the missile. They say Gowadia pocketed $110,000 over two years for his exhaust nozzle design.
The indictment alleges he made six trips to China from 2003 to 2005, conspiring to conceal some of his visits by getting border agents to leave immigration stamps off his passport.
He's also accused of attempting to sell classified stealth technology to the Swiss government and to businesses in Israel and Germany.
Gowadia moved to the U.S. from India in the 1960s for postgraduate work. In 1968 he joined defense contractor Northrop Corp., now Northrop Grumman Corp., where he designed elements of the B-2.
He became a U.S. citizen in the 1970s and retired from Northrop in 1986, two years before the B-2 made its public debut.

Egyptian Tomb Holds Door to Afterlife
CAIRO -- Archaeologists have unearthed a 3,500-year-old door to the afterlife from the tomb of a high-ranking Egyptian official near Karnak temple in Luxor, the Egyptian antiquities authority said Monday. These recessed niches found in nearly all ancient Egyptian tombs were meant to take the spirits of the dead to and from the afterworld. The nearly six-foot- tall slab of pink granite was covered with religious texts.
The door came from the tomb of User, the chief minister of Queen Hatshepsut, a powerful, long ruling 15th century B.C. queen from the New Kingdom with a famous mortuary temple near Luxor in southern Egypt. User held the position of vizier for 20 years, also acquiring the titles of prince and mayor of the city, according to the inscriptions. He may have inherited his position from his father.
Viziers in ancient Egypt were powerful officials tasked with the day-to-day running of the kingdom's complex bureaucracy. As a testament to his importance, User had his own tomb on the west bank of the Nile in Luxor, where royal kings and queens were also buried. A chapel dedicated to him has also been discovered further south in the hills near Aswan.
The stone itself was long way from its tomb and had apparently been removed from the grave and then incorporated into the wall of a Roman-era building, more than a thousand years later.False doors were placed in the west walls of tombs and faced offering tables where food and drink were left for the spirit of the deceased.Egypt's antiquities authority Dr. Zahi Hawass called it "a masterpiece of highly artistic quality and shows a portrait of the king with very fine youthful sculptured features," adding there were still traces of red paint on the head.

Meet the girl with half a brain

For three years, little Cameron Mott’s life was a nightmarish succession of violent seizures that consumed her days and threatened her life. Finally, doctors told her parents there was a way to stop them: All they had to do was remove half of Cameron’s brain.
It was not a diagnosis a parent wants to hear. And going through with the operation was not an easy decision. But the alternative was a steady deterioration of the right half of Cameron’s brain — and her whole life.
“It was very scary, because you just can’t imagine what your child
They got their daughter backHer father, Casey Mott, called Cameron “bubbly,” and the adjective fit perfectly. She was bubbly as a baby, and now, after the radical surgery, she’s bubbly again.
“We more or less lost our daughter and got her back,” Casey told Curry.
Cameron’s story really began six years ago, when she was 3. She suddenly started having seizures. A video supplied by the Motts shows the girl playing happily, then suddenly going completely rigid and collapsing headfirst onto the floor.
Finally, doctors put a name on the condition: Rasmussen’s syndrome, a condition that causes the destruction of one side of the brain. The solution was radical. It’s called a hemispherectomy, which means the removal of half of the brain.
Radical surgeryThe Motts live in North Carolina, and they agreed to travel to Johns Hopkins University Medical Center in Baltimore, where neurosurgeon Dr. George Jallo led the team that carefully removed the right side of Cameron’s brain. The surgery took more than seven hours.
Since the left side of the body is controlled by the right side of the brain, doctors knew that Cameron would be paralyzed on her left side when she awoke. But they also knew that the brains of children have amazing abilities to rewire themselves.
“We like to do children because of their ability or their plasticity — that’s the ability of the other side of the brain that we haven't removed to take over and control the function of the diseased half we’re removing,” Jallo told NBC News.
Cameron was immobilized for the first two days after the surgery to allow her brain to stabilize. Then she went into an intensive physical therapy program. Four weeks after the surgery, she walked out of the hospital.

Get Strong, Toned Legs

This routine targets all of your leg muscles, from your butt down. In addition to making your lower half look fabulous, this workout will also help you walk faster. A recent study found that simply doing one move to strengthen your quads (the fronts of your thighs) could increase your walking speed by 15 percent. That's equivalent to increasing your pace from 3.5 mph to 4 mph. Imagine what you could do if you shape up all of your lower-body muscles. These exercises also challenge your balance, giving your core muscles an extra workout, and improve your posture for a stronger, pain-free stride. (If the balance challenge is too hard, hold on tosomething sturdy.)You'll need a resistance band for at least two of the following moves. Position the band as described, and check that it's secure before you begin the exercise. If you're instructed to make a loop from the band, be aware that the larger the loop, the easier the resistance will be; the smaller the loop, the harder it will be. You can also increase the resistance by moving farther away from the anchor point.
If you need to tie the band in a loop around your lower legs for an exercise, you can wrap it around your legs twice for maximum resistance. Just remember, don't sacrifice good form for increased challenge. Stretching and releasing the band's resistance with control is key to maximizing toning and avoiding injury. Don't let the band snap back once you've reached the top of the move; pause, then slowly release, resisting against the band's pull as you do.
Practice this routine 2 days a week for 4 weeks. Start with 6 to 8 repetitions, working up to 12 to 15 reps by the fourth week.

Married at 9, divorced at 10:

In a harrowing memoir she has yet to read herself, Nujood Ali tells how at age 9 she was forced to marry a man three times her age, raped and beaten, then made Yemeni history by getting a divorce.
"I am Nujood, Age 10 and Divorced," was released in English in the United States this month and is due to be published shortly in Arabic, allowing the now 12-year-old schoolgirl to finally read the story that drew international attention.
"I do not know what is in it, except what I have been told about. I am still waiting to read it in my own language," she said via e-mail through her Yemeni translator and filmmaker Khadija Al-Salami. "But I guess it is important to have my story come out to the rest of the world."
Publishers have plans to release the book, as told to and written by French journalist Delphine Minoui, in 19 languages after it first appeared in France last year.
Two years ago Ali was thrust into the spotlight after her ordeal as a child bride was first reported in the Yemen Times. She traveled to New York as Glamour magazine's woman of the year, becoming an international symbol for women's rights.
The book reveals how when she was around 9, her impoverished father — who had more than a dozen children — agreed for her to marry an older man.
She says he took her out of school, drove her with his family to a village, and raped her the first night of their marriage.
"No matter how I screamed, no one came to help me. It hurt awfully, and I was all alone to face the pain," she recalls in the memoir.
When he eventually allowed her to visit her family in the city of Sanaa, she ran off and hailed a cab to a courthouse. With the help of Yemeni human rights lawyer Shada Nasser, a judge granted her a divorce, making her the Middle Eastern country's first divorced child bride.
But the end of the book is not the end of her story.
Last year her school "kicked her out because she never showed up for classes" as she was too busy doing media interviews, says Al-Salami, who now monitors her education.
After hearing of her lack of progress, the book's French publisher, Michel Lafon, helped her poor family buy a home. Now Ali is trying to focus on schooling, which she is paying for with royalties from her book.
"My life now in Yemen is calm and I live like a happy middle-class kid, where last year I was having a miserable poor life," Ali said via e-mail.
Her case and that of other divorced girls who followed prompted Yemeni citizens push for a ban on marriage before 18.

Dora the Explorer
Glitch leads to adult video on kids channels in NC
March 17, 2010, 9:15 AM EST
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- A cable TV
Time Warner Cable Inc. spokeswoman Melissa Buscher said the problem lasted about two hours Tuesday morning in areas around Raleigh, and several parents called to report it.
Buscher said it happened on two "Kids on Demand" channels that were showing viewers a list of children's programming such as "Dora the Explorer." The titles listed didn't match up with the preview videos in the right-hand corner of the screen, which showed a preview of adult programming instead of kids programming.
Buscher said the company regrets the glitch and has fixed the problem so it won't happen again.
What Are Safe Foods I Could Freeze?
Yeah I like to keep leftovers in the refrigerator, for fast reheating of subsequent servings. But really, is putting foods in the freezer are safe? What Can You Freeze? Here is all you've ever wanted to know about freezing and more: Food stored constantly at 0 °F will always be safe. Only the quality suffers with lengthy freezer storage. Freezing keeps food safe by slowing the movement of molecules, causing microbes to enter a dormant stage. Freezing preserves food for extended periods because it prevents the growth of microorganisms that cause both food spoilage and foodborne illness.
1. Cooked Pasta. Cook a pound of bow-ties (firm but not hard) and rotelle are best for this purpose. Then freeze (unsauced) in freezer and put it into a ready container for adding to a hot sauce or microwaving later.
2. Homemade Pasta Sauce. Make a batch and store in containers (be sure to leave a little space at the top for expansion). Cream sauces do not freeze well.
3. Very Ripe Bananas. For an instant protein rich smoothie store ripe bananas in the freezer, peeled, in freezer bags and blend them with skim milk and soy protein powder.
4.Raw bacon, wrapped side-by-side in pairs in parchment or waxed paper and then enclosed in foil is great for keeping portions on hand.
5. Peeled Deveined Shrimp. Thaw shrimp quickly under cool running water to make a tasty meal in a snap. Hope some of this helped! =)

Sleep Problems
You seem to get enough sleep, the usual 7-9 hours. But you sleep poorly, wake up irritable, and feel tired all day. There are ways to beat the most common obstacles to a good night’s sleep. Repeated waking in the middle of the night sabotages your sleep in two ways: It prevents you from achieving deep, restful REM sleep and the lost hours of sleep cut into your beauty rest. As soon as you notice this happening, take a few steps to prevent it from becoming habitual. The more you keep thinking and worrying about falling back to sleep it makes it harder to sleep. What you can do is: 1. Keep the room dark when you wake up. Whatever you do, don’t turn on the overhead light in the bathroom once you’re there. Use a mini flashlight to navigate your way to the bathroom, or leave a dim nightlight in the next room with the door cracked. Light is one of the most important external factors that can affect sleep. It does so both directly, by making it difficult for people to fall asleep, and indirectly, by influencing the timing of our internal clock and thereby affecting our preferred time to sleep. 2. DO NOT! I REPEAT DO NOT turn on the TV or computer. Nope, not even for a few minutes. The light from the screen “resets” your internal clock, stimulating your central nervous system and making it harder for you to fall back asleep. 3. Don’t eat unless you’re truly hungry. Getting your digestive system revved up can keep you awake, so avoid snacking unless a growling stomach is going to keep you awake. So try to keep away from foods like preserved and smoked meats, chocolate, energy drinks, and spicy foods. 4. Keep a pen and paper next to your bed. If you’re often kept awake by racing thoughts and worries and you tend to make to-do lists in your head, keep a pen or pencil and a small pad of paper handy and write them down. As you put each item down on paper, imagine yourself setting aside that concern. Hope these tips were helpful. If you’ve done these tips and yet you still have difficulty sleeping go to a local doctor and seek futher information.

What Will I Say to My Child? =/
So what are you going to say to your child while their going through a loss of a pet? Uh. Hard one isn't it? Well I can relate to this situation. I had just returned from the vet's office where they told me there was nothing more they could do for my dog and it was time has come to put him down. At that moment my heart just dropped. Moments later, while driving in the car one overwhelming question takes hold, "What am I going to say to my child?" Well here are some guidelines to help you and your child deal with this type of event: 1. Communicate honestly and clearly with your child. Talk in clear and direct terms that do not create confusion. For example, many people use the term "put to sleep" in lieu of euthanasia. It is important to use direct language to describe what is happening so that the child does misinterpret this information and think that the dog will just be sleeping for a long time and thats not the case. 2.Meet your child at their level of understanding. A 9 year old can understand that their pet is not coming back, as to a 3 year old has no concept of the permanence of death. 3. Allow your child to express their feelings about the loss. This means taking the time to really listen to what they say or do. Often young children do not have the words or the ability to identify their feelings and may express their sadness as anger or hostility. Sometimes children will act out the death through their play, creating a mock death scene and burial using action figures, blocks or favorite toys. Make sure their teacher knows about the death as well. Teachers can be a great resource and support to your child at this difficult time, especially for elementary and pre-school children. 4.Be a healthy role model for your child. Children learn how to deal with death from watching their parents. Accept your grief as a normal reaction to death. Hope these points are helpful in some way. For those who are currently going through a loss, God bless you and be with you during these rough times.

Have Healthy Gums & Hearts

Green tea: Scientists reported in 2009 that Japanese men who drank a daily cup of green tea significantly lowered their risk of developing gum disease the more tea, the lower the risk. The researchers believe antioxidants called catechins in green tea are the key. Catechins hamper the body’s inflammatory response to the bacteria that cause gum disease. Whole grains: A study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that men who ate four or more servings of whole grains a day reduced their risk of periodontal disease by 23 percent. Compared to refined carbohydrates (white bread, white rice), whole grains (oatmeal, brown rice) are digested more slowly, causing a steadier rise in blood glucose. Avoiding spikes in blood sugar tempers the body’s production of inflammatory proteins and lowers the risk of both gum and heart disease. Raisins: You might think that because raisins are sweet and sticky, they’re not good for your oral health. But research has shown that antioxidants in raisins fight the growth of a type of bacteria that can cause inflammation and gum disease.

How to Build Strong Bones!

Try to avoid soft drinks.Soft drinks are hard on your health. It may be satisfying to down a soft drink on a hot day and you may even feel “safe” because you’re drinking the diet kind, avoiding calories so you won’t put on weight. But calories aren’t the only drawback in colas and other carbonated beverages; they can deplete the calcium in your bones, because they contain phosphoric acid, which makes calcium pass out of your system in the urine.
First Date

There are some things you should definitely save for a later time. Just stay calm and be yourself. First off, DO NOT spend any amount of time talking about your ex on the first date.
The first date is for you to get to know each other, not for you to have a willing audience to bash your ex. Avoid talking about family problems, he/she is interested in you not your family problems at the moment, that topic is for a another time. If your date asks you about your interests and you spend all night talking about all the things you hate, you can bet that there won’t be a second date.
Keep your comments and attitude positive. You can spend time bonding over the things you hate after you have gotten comfortable with each other.
Remember don’t be shy be yourself, show some confidence. If he/she see’s that you’re comfortable around them they’ll losen up as well.
They’ll see your laid back and chill and you guys will be talking for hours.
Make sure there are no akward moments.
Don’t keep quiet half the time, say something! Shoot some random topics, but not too random to a point they’re uncomfortable. *
One more thing ALWAYS REMEMBER to MAINTAIN EYE CONTACT!
To Reset Your iPOD

1-Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
2-Press and hold the Menu and Center (Select) buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 8 seconds. You may need to repeat this step.
3- If you are having difficulty resetting your iPod because it’s not cooperating, set it on a flat surface. Make sure the finger pressing the Select button is not touching any part of the click wheel. Also make sure that you are pressing the Menu button toward the outside of the click wheel, and not near the center.
*If the above steps did not work, try connecting iPod to a power adapter and plug the power adapter into an electrical outlet, or connect iPod to your computer. Make sure the computer is turned on and isn’t set to go to sleep.
If these steps don’t work then have it checked out.
Prevent Bad Breath
1. Drink plenty of water
2. Maintain a good oral hygiene
3. Treat existing oral diseases
4. Avoid commercial mouthwashes
5. Use natural antibiotics
6. Eat crisp fruits and vegetables
7. Make your own toothpaste
8. Switch to tea
9. Chew sugarless gum
