Sharks Off Cape Cod

Sept. 4 -- The ocean water around Chatham, Massachusetts, is playing host to some unwelcome guests this holiday weekend: sharks.
At least one large shark sighting was confirmed Friday by Greg Skomal, shark expert for the state's Division of Marine Fisheries.
That sighting occurred off the eastern shore of Monomoy Island, a National Wildlife Refuge off the southern elbow of Cape Cod, according to Lisa Capone, Massachusetts Department of Energy and Environmental Affairs press secretary.
The species, though not confirmed, was "most likely" a great white shark, she said.
The sighting came a day after Skomal reported as many as five large sharks were seen near the island, about a mile or more away from Chatham's Lighthouse Beach, a public swimming area.
Capone said Skomal was searching the area of the island Friday afternoon, though weather conditions were "not ideal," with fog and wind.
Meanwhile, officials were advising residents and visitors to be cautious while visiting the beaches this weekend.

Galaxy with black hole discovered

The most distant known galaxy to host a supermassive black hole has been discovered in a galaxy that formed in the early history of the universe. The galaxy, as large as the Milky Way, is about 12.8 billion light-years away and harbors a supermassive black hole that contains at least a billion times as much matter as our sun. The universe is about 13.7 billion years old, and faraway objects like this are near the dawn of time, their light just now arriving at Earth. The find, to be detailed in the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society later this month, was unexpected: "It is surprising that such a giant galaxy existed when the universe was only one-sixteenth of its present age, and that it hosted a black hole one billion times more massive than the sun. The galaxy and black hole must have formed very rapidly in the early universe," said Tomotsugu Goto of the University of Hawaii and part of the team that made the discovery.

Ends 81-Year Marriage

The Milfords met in 1926 at a YMCA dance in Plymouth. They were married two years later.
They were recognized as the longest-married couple currently in Britain. In February 2010, they would have broken the record of 81 years and 260 days for the longest British marriage ever. Anita Milford, also 101, was with her husband when he died. "She's very upset obviously, but she was sitting holding his hand when he passed away," their son, also named Frank, told the BBC. "For the past three weeks or so he hadn’t been eating or drinking and I think we all realized he was ready to die," the 76-year-old son said. "He knew it was his time and I think he simply died of old age." When they celebrated their 81st wedding anniversary in May, the Milfords credited daily disagreements for keeping their marriage strong. "Not big rows, just the odd cross word," Anita Milford told The Times of London. "As far as I am concerned, it’s healthy." She also stressed that the couple made time for "a little romance" every day. The couple had two children, five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

oldest dog, dies at age 21

Chanel, the wirehaired dachshund who held the Guinness World Record for oldest dog, died Aug. 28, PEOPLE Pets has learned. The pooch celebrated her 21st birthday on May 6 — that's 147 in dog years, according to the Guinness Web site.Earlier this year, the dog's owners, Karl and Denice Shaughnessy of Port Jefferson Station, N.Y., said that the canine, who wore sunglasses for cataracts but was otherwise in good health, still had plenty of pep. "While I go to work she sleeps all day until I come home and then when I get home she is like a ball of fire," Denice told U.K.'s Telegraph. But, just like humans of a certain age, Chanel occasionally had senior moments. "Sometimes I will find her walking around at night and I have to give her a little snack and then she goes back to bed," her owner, Denice told the Telegraph. In other interviews, Denice, who adopted the dog in 1988, said that treats from privately owned dog food company Dogswell contributed to the dog's longevity.
